South Crete

Join our tour and discover the South of Crete!

Our first stop we will make at the ancient city of Gortys, one of the most significant ancient cities of the island with a very rich history and one of the largest archaeological sites of Greece. Here you will see the St. Titus’ Church, the Chamber of the Law Code, the Odeon and the square with the everlasting gnarled olive trees and the evergreen plane tree, under the shade of which, according to myth, Zeus and Europe had their wedding ceremony.

Leaving the site of Gortys and continuing our trip to south, we make our next stop at the Odigitria Monastery, dedicated to Virgin Mary, run and inhabited by monks. It was built during the 14th century and is one of the most historical monasteries on Crete, with a vast land property. It was named after the most famous miraculous icon in the Byzantine Empire. Initially built as a fortress, it still preserves some parts of its original walls.

After visiting the monastery we go to the village of Matala located on the Libyan Sea and famous for its beautiful beaches and gorges carved into the steep cliffs of the area. Here we will enjoy swimming in the crystal clear waters, warm sun and lunch in one of many small taverns by the sea.
